Physical Therapy

What is Physical Therapy?

Physical Therapy is a health care profession dedicated to the prevention, evaluation, rehabilitation and treatment of physical dysfunction and injury. Physical Therapists evaluate and treat the neuro-musculo-skeletal system with a special emphasis on the enhancement of function.

Dr. Ruth Maher is a Physical Therapist and a member of the The Irish Society of Physio Therapists and also the American and Australian Physical Therapy Associations and many other international organizations. These organizations have strict Codes of Ethics which set out expected standards of professional conduct and require continued professional development to keep up to date with the latest medical and therapeutic procedures.

How can Physical Therapy help?

Physical Therapy is useful in the early stages of a joint or soft tissue (muscle or ligament) injury such as those seen in many common sports injuries. Physical Therapy can relieve pain, enhance movement and aid the healing process. In the mid stages of an injury, Physical Therapy optimises function and allows more activity without re-injury. In the later phase of an injury, Physical Therapy is used to retrain overall balance, regain full function and improve physical fitness.

At The Maher Sports and Wellness Centre, we specialize in sports and orthopedic injuries, whether chronic, acute, or post-surgical.

The following list contains some of the most common reasons to see a Physical Therapist:

  • Back and Neck Pain
  • Shoulder, arm, wrist or hand problems
  • Hip, knee, ankle or foot problems
  • Sport injuries
  • Joint sprains
  • Muscle strains and tears
  • Rehabilitation following surgery or injury
  • Ergonomic or postural problems
  • Repetitive motion disorders e.g Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
  • Women's health issues
  • Arthritis
  • Respiratory conditions
  • Impaired mobility
  • History of falls
  • Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy

Because Physical Therapists are experts in movement and function, their skills are not solely confined to treating people who are injured. We work with individuals of all ages to screen for potential problems. We establish preventive exercise programs and develop workout programs that are safe and effective.
