Dr. Ruth M. Maher, M.I.S.C.P., P.T., D.P.T., M.P.T., BCIA-PMDB, CEAS, B.S.
As founder of The Maher Sports and Wellness Centre, Dr. Ruth Maher believes in a hands on individualized and collaborative approach to patient care in order to optimise, maintain and/or rehabilitate the individual to the highest possible level of independence in movement and physical function.
Her experience has shown that patient outcomes are better when there is a multidisciplinary and collaborative approach in treatment.
Dr. Maher received her Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Exercise Physiology and her Masters in Physical Therapy (M.P.T.) from Georgia State University in Atlanta, Georgia and her Clinical Doctorate in Physical Therapy (D.P.T.) from Simmons College in Boston, MA.
She was a faculty member at Georgia State University’s Master in Physical Therapy / Physical Therapy and has guest lectured annually at several other university programs in the US. Dr. Maher has also presented nationally and internationally at several conferences including The Irish Society of Physio Therapists Annual Conference, American Physical Therapy Association Annual Conferences, Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society, Wound Ostomy and Continence Nurses AGM, Grand Rounds at the Department of Urology at Emory University Hospital and was part of a US delegation of Physical Therapists to lecture in China in 2004.
Prior to starting her own practice several years ago she was Director of Physical Therapy/Physical Therapy at Hyox, one of the largest hyperbaric and comprehensive outpatient rehabilitation facilities in the USA.
She has also worked in several hospitals including the Shepherd Spinal Center and Emory University Hospital in Atlanta and completed a clinical rotation at Cork University Hospital. Prior to completing her degree in Physical Therapy she worked as an Exercise Physiologist and completed an internship at the Cardiac Rehabilitation program at Emory University Hospital's Cardiac Rehabilitation Center. In the outpatient setting she treated several professional and collegiate athletes.
Dr. Maher was inducted into the Phi Beta Delta Honours Society for International Scholars in 2001 for scholarly achievement.
Dr. Maher was a recipient of the Gordon S. Cummings award for clinical excellence at Georgia State University and was also the recipient of a research award for a study conducted as a student which was later published in the Journal of Gait and Posture
Dr. Maher is a Pelvic Muscle Dysfunction Biofeedback specialist certified by the Biofeedback Institute of America to treat elimination disorders and pelvic pain. The Biofeedback Certification Institute of America (BCIA) was formed in January 1981 to establish and maintain professional standards for the provision of biofeedback services and to certify those who meet these standards.
Dr. Maher is a Certified Ergonomic Assessment Specialist.
Dr. Ruth Maher is a Physical Therapist and a member of the The Irish Society of Physio Therapists and also the American and Australian Physical Therapy Associations and many other international organizations:
Dr. Maher is an avid sports enthusiast and has represented Ireland in athletics. She was also selected to compete for Ireland in the World Power lifting Championships and has held the Irish record in the 56kg class since 1989.
